Australian Democrats transportation policy

Maglev fast train

Our Vision

Redirect the $17 billion Labor wanted to spend on new freeways and a short rail tunnel over the next decade to radically improving Victoria’s public transport and bridge level crossings. Download our Action Plan (pdf)

Fast and Reliable Public Transport

Metro Express
Fast reliable 20 minute “clock-face” service all day, every day on Clockface TimetableV/Line lines that leaves space for V/Line and freight trains. A sample clock-face timetable is shown right.

Metro Continuous
All non-V/Line train and tram lines running continuously – services less than 10 minutes apart in daytime and peak hours.

Automatic Failover
Multiple power supplies to every section of track, multiple backups for all key systems.

Regular Regional Services
At least hourly ‘clockface’ regional services.

Extending the Rail Network

Doncaster Extension
From Victoria Park along the Eastern Freeway as far to Springvale Road, with later extension to near Ringwood. Link to tram up Doncaster Road.

Rowville Extension
From Oakleigh along Wellington Road past Monash University.

Mornington Extension
From Frankston.

Mernda Extension
Instead of a busway.

Alamein Line Extension
2 kilometres joining Alamein line to East Malvern line.

Bendigo Express
Track works to allow Bendigo and Sunbury trains to pass Watergardens Metro trains improving all services.

Less Traffic Gridlock

Bridging Level Crossings
Mass produced road bridges to remove most level crossings. Separate pedestrian bridges. Attractively landscaped under bridges.

Halving Traffic
Transit lanes reserved for cars with passengers throughout the inner city. Double the people per car – halve the traffic.

Connecting the bike paths
making bikes a safer transport option.

More people on public transport and bikes
less cars in your way.

Simplifying Myki

Myki Membership
A monthly direct debit fee of about $100 for unlimited use of zone 1 & 2 public transport, removing the need to swipe off.

Including Maglev
Maglev fast rail has very low running costs so could be included in the Metro zone.

Faster Buses and Trams

Separation
With more people in less cars, space is freed up for more tram reservations and more bus lanes, especially at intersections.

Priority
Higher priority for trams and buses at intersections.

Passenger Information Displays
At all major stops. Ideally showing minutes but if not the location of the next service.

Continuous Running
No timetable while service interval is below 10 minutes. Trams and buses travel as fast as they can. 20 minute “clock-face” timetable off peak.

W-Class Trams
Restored trams to be brought back to run in between low floor trams in peak hour. (Excludes fast light rail routes.)

No ticket sales on Buses
Sale of tickets by the driver slows down buses too much. Passengers would need to buy tickets at the shops, or be members.

Tram Extensions

• No.3 to East Malvern station, Chadstone and Hughesdale Station.

• No.5 to Darling Station.

• No.6 to Ashburton Station.

• No.48 to Doncaster. (Joining the new Doncaster rail line.)

• No.75 to Knox shopping Centre.

Less Delays

Call ahead
For sick passengers instead of waiting for the ambulance. First aiders at key stations.

Continued operation
With minor faults. A faulty train is better than no train.
Regular Running

Regular Running

Same Direction
Same direction round the city loop all day, every day.

Same Stops
Same stops for every train type all day, every day.

Benefits of Clock-face timetable

* Three express V/Line or freight services per hour. 35 minutes to Pakenham.
* Six new trains to Rowville per hour from the city loop.
* More express services to Frankston and Cheltenham from the city loop and Flinders Street Station.
