Australian Democrats withdraw from Niddrie by Election

MEDIA RELEASE

Thursday March 8, 2012

The Australian Democrats are withdrawing from the by election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Niddrie. The by election was prompted by the resignation from parliament of former deputy premier Rob Hulls.

The withdrawal is due to our failure to correctly lodge the nomination form for the Australian Democrats candidate, Rob Livesay. We did present in good faith what we believed was a correctly prepared nomination form, but one of the six supporting signatories was not listed on the electoral roll as a Niddrie voter and the nomination has been disallowed. There was no time remaining to remedy this before the close of nominations, so we are obliged to withdraw.

“With no Liberal candidate and no Democrats candidate, Niddrie voters will have a very thin field to choose from on March 24,” David Collyer, Australian Democrats Victorian Campaign Director said.

“This is a stark reminder to voters of the need to advise the VEC and the AEC when they move house, even if the move is just to the next street.”

Democrats to Contest Niddrie By-election

Niddrie By-election 2012

Media Release, Wednesday February 1, 2012

The Australian Democrats have nominated Rob Livesay to contest the by-election in the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Niddrie. Rob previously contested the seat for the Democrats at the last state election in October 2009.

“The key issue Niddrie voters will cast their vote on is Education,” Rob Livesay said today.

“The public school system serving Niddrie from kindergartens to year 12 is a disgrace. It is starved of funds, which means the classrooms are crumbling, the teachers discouraged and the children floundering. Further, the large number of special needs students who need but are not getting extra resources only makes the battle more difficult.

“The constant under-investment means our kids are really struggling to meet national objectives in literacy, numeracy and reading. Both Liberal and Labor skimp and crimp on providing basics to the citizens of tomorrow.

“Do we really want to create an underclass under-educated and under-achieving kids – marked because their parents chose to use the public system? Because this is exactly what current policies will do.”

Rob worked energetically with groups defending the Ballerrt Mooroop College, an aboriginal school, that lost facilities to a much-needed special school.

Rob is well known in Niddrie as a sport enthusiast, supporting local Aussie Rules and cricket teams at Airport West and Keilor Park, including advocacy for sports clubs to local government.

He is a member of Friends of Steele Creek, a lobbyist for the urgently needed rail link to Tullamarine Airport and a tireless supporter of local small business.

His three children attended Rosehill Secondary College.

The date for the by-election is yet to be decided by Premier Ted Baillieu.

Democrats Urge Victorians to Sign Amnesty’s Asylum Seeker Petition

Democrats Urge Victorians to Support Amnesty's PetitionAccording to the latest polls the majority of Australians support housing asylum seekers onshore while their claims are processed and that number is growing by the day. Australia’s High Court has already upheld the rights of asylum seekers; now it’s time for our politicians to do the right thing.

Amnesty International volunteers will be traveling around the state until Monday October 10 collecting petition signatures to tell the government that processing all refugee claims onshore is not only Australia’s duty as a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, but also a fairer, cheaper and more humane approach.

Amnesty’s Secretary General, Salil Shetty, will hand deliver the petitions to Immigration Minister Chris Bowen ahead of Parliament’s 11 October vote on changes to the Migration Act that would weaken protections for refugees and shun our international obligations under the Refugee Convention.

The petition urges the government to abandon policies that would send refugees to other countries and commit to processing the refugee claims of people who arrive in Australia. It asks that when creating refugee policy, the government remember that seeking asylum is legal, even if arriving by boat – the number of asylum seekers arriving in Australia is small compared to other places – and the vast majority who arrive by boat are genuine refugees fleeing violence and terror.

The Australian Democrats wholeheartedly support the Amnesty campaign and urge Victorians to sign the petition when called upon by an Amnesty volunteer. The petition will also be available for signing at our October 10, monthly Democrats Soapbox Forum.

On Monday October 3 at 10am Amnesty is running a training session for volunteers at their 134 Cambridge St, Collingwood, Action Centre followed by a petition signing blitz around Melbourne CBD.

Individuals and organisations can also run there own petition signing event by contacting Amnesty’s Community Campaigner, Anouska Teunen on 0434 424 475 or by email at vicvolunteers@amnesty.org.au

Petitions and other resources are available for downloading here.

Clyde Road needs a grade separation

Mr Battin should stand by his word.

Media Release, January 16, 2011.

Hayden Ostrom Brown I have thrown my support behind a grade separation of Clyde Road. It is clearly a safety issue.

Emergency services should not be stuck at boom gates for up to a minute when someone is in dire need of assistance. I believe it is vital that we tackle congestion and traffic flow.

At the Beaconsfield forum before the Victorian election, in which I was the Australian Democrats candidate for Gembrook, Mr Battin outlined exactly why a grade separation is so vital. But now he’s elected he seems to be backing away from the issue. Continue reading

It’s time for a new tactic in the war on drugs. Australian Democrats Victoria call for an end to prohibition.

After decades of prohibition anyone who wants illicit drugs can still easily get them. Attempted prohibition really means Uncontrolled Criminal Supply.

We propose a new approach based on Controlled Government Supply. The government would take control of the drug trade by supplying selected, clean, uncontaminated drugs to registered users while providing treatment programs to get the registered users off the drugs forever. Continue reading
